Cozumel

Off the eastern shoreline of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, Cozumel is an isle in the Caribbean Sea. Renowned for its scuba diving, this popular Central American tourist destination is one of the eight municipalities (municipios) of the state of Quintana Roo. The name of the main town on the island is San Miguel where almost everybody on this isle dwells. Cozumel is the largest island of Mexico. The landscape is basically low, flat, and densely vegetated.

The Maya Moon Goddess and the place of worship were a spot of pilgrimage, especially by women desiring fertility. There are a number of Post-Classic remnants on this islet. The ruins of San Gervasio are situated approximately at the center of the island and are the largest remaining ruins.

Hurricane Wilma hit the island in 2005 with shocking effect. The usually green rainforest was cut off. No traces of leaves were left on the highest five feet of almost every tree. A major amount of vegetation was cleaned out when salt water washed over the island. The sewers of San Miguel were also heavily damaged.
