Tourist Attractions in Martinique

The land of Martinique differs from the high and rocky mountains of the north and center to the undulating hills around Fort-de-France and the secure, protected harbors of the lower west shore. Martinique has a range of small museums rejoicing aspects of the island's culture and history, including the Empress Josephine's link with the island, the flare-up of Montagne Pelée, the rum trade and dolls made from local materials. These Tourist Attractions in Martinique have been drawing travelers from all over the world for years.

Fort-de-France
The island's capital is a place of zigzag streets and bright markets. In the heart of the town is the park of La Savanne. A statue in La Savanne honors Napoleon's Empress Josephine, a native of Martinique, whose home, La Pagerie, is one of the main tourist attractions.

St Pierre
The 1430m (4700ft) volcanic mountain in the north, Montagne Pelée, last erupted in 1902 destroying the city of St Pierre and its entire population of 30,000.

The remains of St Pierre are now a tourist attraction. Today, this is Martinique's second city and, although run down, still shows some signs of its former glory: the old stone stairways and bridges still exist, and the ruins of the theater are a prominent feature.

Le Carbet
Near Le Carbet, where Columbus landed on his fourth voyage in 1502, is the reinstated plantation of Leyritz, which is now observed by many tourists.

The South
This is a major resort area. It has some of the island's best bathing beaches. HMS Diamond Rock is a rock which was chosen a man-of-war by the British during the Napoleonic wars and rates a 12-gun salute from passing British warships.

So make a trip to this gorgeous island and experience a perfect getaway. Travour.com offers information on Tourist Attractions in Martinique and Romantic vacations in Martinique. For more information on Martinique and other islands worldwide, keep browsing through Travour.
