Sao Tome and Principe

São Tomé and Príncipe, consisted of two islands, São Tomé and Príncipe is the second smallest (population wise) African nation as well as the smallest Portuguese-speaking country in the world. The official name of this island is The Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe. Situated in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western equatorial coast of Africa, this piece of land is nothing but the part of an extinct volcanic mountain range. In fact, São Tomé, the sizable southern island, is located almost exactly on the equator.

The islands of São Tomé and Príncipe were unpopulated before the advent of the Portuguese during 1469 and 1471. Here most of the earliest residents were undesirables sent from Portugal, mostly Jews. The land had a long cherished history of slave trading. Along with its exotic scenic beauty, the historical background of the place too, has been attracting tourists for years.

São Tomé is 50 kilometers long and 32 kilometers wide and the hillier of the two islands. Its peaks reach the height of 2,024 meters (6,640 ft.). Príncipe is about 30 kilometers long and 6 kilometers wide. Swift streams roaring down the mountains through green forest and cropland to the sea cross both islands.

Since the land had been a Portuguese colony for a long time, therefore, culturally the African people are highly influenced by the Portuguese rulers of the islands. São Toméans is famous for ússua and socopé rhythms, while Principe practises the dêxa beat. Portuguese ballroom dancing has an essential part in the improvement of these rhythms and their associated dances.
