Weather in Sri Lanka

As an island nation Sri Lanka also experiences a typical tropical type of climate. The weather usually is hot and humid with little difference in the temperature between day and night. It lies between 5 and 10 N latitude. The climate remains quite hot throughout the year and is moderated by ocean winds.


the climate in the island is variable though because if the presence of hilly terrains. The mean temperature differs by a huge margin. It ranges from a low of 16°C in Nuwara Eliya in the Central Highlands to 32° C in Trincomalee on the northeast coast at the same period of the year. In the hill stations of the island the winter s are quite chilly with chances of frosting prevailing for many days. At an average the whole island experiences an average temperature of around 28 to 30 °C


January is the coolest month of the year for the Sri Lankans and May being the hottest. The maximum temperature in the summers can reach up to 40°C at certain places.


The rainfall is heavily influenced by the Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean. The slopes of the Central Highlands experiences a heavy rainfall compared to the Leeward side. Maximum rainfall received in certain places is around 2500 mm per month. Monsoon is prevalent in the months of December to March. These months also experiences a heavy rise in the humidity level too. Although humidity remains above 70% throughout the year.
