Yap Island

Tucked away in the western folds of the Pacific Ocean, Yap Island is a part of the Caroline Islands, the westernmost state of the Federated States of Micronesia. The "island" of Yap is actually an archipelago made up of four continental islands (hence also known as the Yap Islands), knitted close together to each other joined within a common coral reef. The formation of Yap Island is believed to be a product of the tectonic movement of the earth, more specifically an uplift of the Eurasian plate.

Two most notable features of Yap are its stone money and giant manta rays. This stone money also known as Fé are large donut-shaped, carved disks of calcite of various sizes. The larger the size the more valuable they are.

The manta rays, is the name given to congregate in the waters around the island, which are largely instrumental in catapulting this island to the status of a top scuba diving destination.
