Avenue of the Baobabs

The Avenue of the Baobabs or Allee de baobab or Adansoniagranddieri attracts locals and tourists all year through. The rustic dirt road lined by baobab trees, some of which are about 1000 years old looks stunning at sunset. These trees are colloquially referred to as boaboa or bottle trees. Some of these trees stand 98 feet tall; an interesting feature that characterizes these trees is that the branches sprout only at the top!

In fact the best way to experience this natural wonder is to walk down the lane at sunrise or sunset. You can drive down the 260 kilometre stretch and regale nearby pastures. You can stop over at a local village for a typical Malagasy snack!

The town closest to this spectacular avenue is Morondava. The local ruins and tombs here are a must visit. Tour the local Ostrich farms and enjoy the amazing laid back ambience, like nothing else you’ve ever experienced.

The dense deciduous forests towards the north of Adansoniagranddieri is yet another attraction for nature lovers. Quite a few animal and bird species live in the green haven.
