Tourist Attractions in Fire Island

White sandy beaches, dazzling dunes, aqua blue water, and exotic night life as well the Fire Island Light Station make Fire Island. Fire Island national seashore is a combination of natural and cultural resources. Situated a little away from New York City, the park is a world apart from the busy communities adjacent to it. It is 32-mile-long seashore which contains natural features such as the Otis Pike Wilderness Area, the only federal wilderness in New York, and the Sunken Forest, a 300-year-old holly forest. There are museums, educational programs, tours, interesting speakers and more to enjoy.

Robert Moses State Park

The beautiful Robert Moses State Park links Fire Island on the western end via Captree Island to Jones Beach Island and Long Island. There are life guards, picnic areas, bath houses, and concessions. The eastern most end of Robert Moses State Park is bordered by the Fire Island National Seashore (a national park). All communities are positioned in the national park.

Fire Island Lighthouse

Participate in a very interesting tour of the lighthouse and climb the top. The guides are volunteers and everyone makes the tour slightly different. An excess of programs are presented to adults and children alike. What a view from top where you can watch the shifting nature of a barrier beach. The museum and shop are a popular destination.

Sailors Haven

It is home to one of the best known areas of Fire Island National Seashore: The Sunken Forrest. Situated near the core of the island, it offers a one and a half mile long walkway through the Forest. Sailors Haven also presents a visitor center, snack bar, picnic tables, life- guarded beach (summer only), a 42-slip marina with electricity and coin pump- out, and bathhouse.

The Sunken Forest

Trip to Fire Island must incorporate a visit to the Sunken Forest, one of the National Seashore's highlights. The forest is approximately 40 acres, and consists chiefly of American holly, sassafras, and shadblow. There are trees estimated to be well over 200 years old. The forest is not really below sea level, as many guests think. Rather, because it has developed behind the line of secondary dunes, it appears to be "sunken" beneath the tops of the dunes.

Fire Island National Seashore

Fire Island stretches 55 kilometers (32 miles) from Democrat Point on the west to Moriches Inlet on the east. Standing defiantly facing the Atlantic while protecting the waters of Great South Bay and the mainland of Long Island at its back, this island is a great tourist destination. Here efforts have been made to preserve the natural life whether it is a hidden hardwood grove or long-legged herons stalking stiffly through grassy wetlands.

So make a trip to this gorgeous island and experience a perfect getaway. Travour.com offers information on Tourist Attractions in Fire Island and Romantic vacations in Fire Island. For more information on Fire Island and other islands worldwide, keep browsing through Travour.
