Weather in Grand Terre

Grand Terre Island is an erratically formed island situated in the southeast Louisiana between Barataria Bay and Gulf of Mexico . The island area is facing some of the highest erosion rates in the Louisiana coastal system. Different restoration projects are presently in progress to protect the land. However, besides its rich natural beauty, the park offers excellent opportunities for fishing, crabbing, sunning, camping and nature watching.

Area: 14,600 square kilometers (5,600 square miles)

The windward eastern side: The ecoregion

East: New Caledonia's mountainous main island, smaller Loyalty Islands

South: The Isle of Pines

There are five peaks that exceed 1500 meters elevation in this island. New Caledonia lies astride the Tropic of Capricorn , between 19º and 23º south latitude, 1,200 km east of Australia and 1,500 km northeast of New Zealand .

The climate of this beautiful islands is tropical , and rainfall is highly seasonal. Rainfall averages about—

1,500 mm yearly on the Loyalty Islands



2,000 mm at low elevations on eastern Grand Terre, and

2,000-4,000 mm at high elevations on Grand Terre

The western slopes of Grand Terre are much drier, and house the New Caledonia dry forests ecoregion .

New Caledonia is an ancient portion of Gondwana , the southern super-continent . It got segregated from Australia 85 million years ago , and remained attached to New Zealand until 55 million years ago . It has been secluded from other land masses since then.
