Weather in Mackinac Island
The Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan is characterized by moderate summers and cold winters. The cooling effect of the lake breezes prevailing here has made it a favorite haunt of visitors who want to escape the summer heat. In fact, the moderating influence of the Lakes is felt in all areas of the weather, with sunny summers as the cool water of the Lakes chill the air near the earth's surface, producing a stable atmosphere.
In winter, the area becomes a snowy wonderland, with an average of 40-70 inches of snowfall, depending on location. The upper Michigan generally receives precipitation of around 30 inches per year, with occasional thunderstorms in spring and summer.
Mild days and cool nights welcome the onset of autumn, when the water turns too cold for swimming. However, the time is just right for other activities such as fall color tours, antiquing, golfing, and exploring the countryside dotted with several placid lakes.
