Weather in Malta

Malta, lying amidst the Mediterranean is strongly influenced by the sea in terms of the weather. The climate showcases a typical Mediterranean flavor similar to that found in the region of southern Italy and southern Greece.

The climate throughout the year is characterized by hot, dry summers, warm and infrequently wet autumns, and short, cool winters with optimum rainfall. The months of October and march receives the maximum rainfall of about 600 mm.

The temperature fluctuation is a very uncommon affair in Malta with the annual mean being 18ºC and the monthly averages ranging from 12º C to 31ºC. The island usually experiences strong and frequent winds with the cool northwesterly (majjistral),the dry northeasterly (grigal, or gregale), and the hot humid southeasterly (xlokk, or sirocco) being the common ones. The climate remains mostly moist with the relative humidity seldom failing below the 40% mark.


The effect of cold are affected by the north and northeast winds from central Europe. The winters are usually mild and sudden drop of the mercury is a rarity. As a matter of fact day and night temperatures have never fallen below 10ºC and 0ºC respectively.

Summers are marked by sunny days with the month of April showing signs of warming up. The months from April to August remains fairly dry. The months of July and August are the hottest months in Malta with temperature reaching up to 35ºC.


On an average Malta enjoy a very sunny climate, usually with five to six hours of sunshine a day in midwinter and over twelve hours a day in mid-summer.
