North Stradbroke Island

Charming North Stradbroke Island is an appealing combination of rocky coastal scenery, serene inland lagoons, and immaculate seashores. It is one of the world's largest sand islands, located at the southern edge of Moreton Bay. The land is simply easy to get to by vehicle ferry ("barge") and water taxi from Cleveland. The most spectacular scenery of this island has been primarily attracting tourists for years. White sandy beaches stretch into a never-ending horizon fringed by the aqua blue ocean, while a system of freshwater lakes in the island's centre provides beautiful picnic and swimming spots.

The local name of this island is Minjerribah. However, in the year 1827, Captain H. J. Rous, who was the commander of the HMS Rainbow (the first British ship of war to enter Moreton Bay) and had the title of Viscount Dunwich named the island after his father the Earl of Stradbroke. The town is named after his title, the entrance channel after himself and even gave his boat a Guernsey with the identification of Rainbow Beach.

This island's most eminent person was Oodgeroo Noonuccal, who was previously recognized as Kath Walker. She was an indigenous writer and an activist for native-rights. She was one of the prime-movers of the progress that lead to the 1997 agreement between the local government council and the aboriginal people of the area claiming rights over the island and parts of Moreton Bay.

North Stradbroke Island is famous for its extended spotless white beaches in the east, its quietness due to a prolonged seclusion and its rich variety of nature varying from whales passing point lookout to the many wild orchids in the core of the island. There are two freshwater lakes namely Brown Lake and the beautiful Blue Lake located in Blue Lake National Park. At times the beaches and dunes may form lagoons and in some areas there are extensive swamplands.
