Jamaica is a magnificent island in the Caribbean Sea. It's original Arawakan-speaking Taíno inhabitants named the island Xaymaca, which means either the "Land of Springs" or the "Land of Wood and Water". Previously a Spanish tenure known as Santiago, then the British West Indies Crown colony of Jamaica is this land's history. It is the third most populous Anglophone country in the Americas, after the United States and Canada. Jamaica is the largest English speaking island in the Carribean.
Jamaica is rich in culture, and has a strong worldwide presence. The musical genres reggae, ska, mento, rocksteady and dub exist here. Globally recognized reggae musician Bob Marley was born in Jamaica. Other international figure includes; Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Dekker, Shaggy, Beenie Man, Shabba Ranks, Supercat, Buju Banton, Sean Paul, I Wayne, Capleton, Bounty Killer and many others.
