Prince Edward Island Ferry

Earlier Prince Edward Island's transportation network was basically seaport centric, with Charlottetown, Summerside, Borden, Georgetown, and Souris as the major ports of call, all of which were well connected with other modes of transportation like railways and airports for communication with mainland North America. However that changed dramatically with the abondment of Railway system by CN in the year 1989 and consequently two passenger-vehicle ferry services were started to connect the province to the mainland. These were:

Marine Atlantic, which provided year round ferry service between Borden-Cape Tormentine but was later replaced with the opening of the Confederation Bridge on 1st June, 1997 which connected Borden-Carleton to Cape Jourimain.

While, Northumberland Ferries Limited operates only seasonally, connecting Wood Islands and Caribou. These ferries depart from Caribou, Nova Scotia and Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island every 45 minutes, and take you on a pleasant ferry tour, which lasts for around one hour and fifteen minutes. Have a gala time on board striking up an interesting conversation or lounging on the deck while snacking on the crispies. Enjoy the scenic views, often with some traditional "music on deck," providing the perfect background score for the lyrical ambience.

A third ferry service- CTMA, though seasonal operates between Souris- Cap-aux-Meules, further connecting with Quebec's Magdalen Islands.
