San Juan Island Ferry

The term "San Juans" popularly refers to a chain comprised of hundreds of small islands almost half of which are submerged at high tide. The most popular islands o this archipelago are San Juan Island (and its busy port at Friday Harbor), Orcas Island (Rosario), Lopez & Shaw.

In an effort to facilitate easier transportation among these islands four separate ferry systems have come up to serve the San Juan Islands.

These operate from Seattle, Bellingham, Port Angeles and Port Townsend. In addition to these regular ferry services, there are seasonal passenger ferries to Friday Harbor as well. There is year-round vehicle/passenger ferry service from Anacortes, to Friday Harbor, whereas Washington State Ferries operate between Orcas, Shaw and Lopez.
