The official name of Fiji is Republic of the Fiji Islands. The earliest inhabitants of Fiji came from South East Asia around 1000 BC as indicated by the excavated pottery traced to these first inhabitants. It was much later in the 17th century when European explorers discovered Fiji.
There are three official languages of Fiji as prescribed by the constitution: English, Bau Fijian and Hindustani.
