Randall's Island

Situated in the feathery turquoise waters of the East River in New York, Randall's Island is treacherously cut off from Manhattan on the west by the river's main channel. The Hell Gate acts as a divider between the island and Queens on the east, whereas the Bronx Kill demarcates the island in the north from the Bronx. On the south however, landfill joins it to Ward's Island. Though under the administration of borough of Manhattan, the two islands together form New York County's Census Tract 240, which supports a total population of 1,386 living on 2.2 km² of land area, according to the United States Census, 2000.
