Tourist Attractions in Randall's Island
Randall's island is named after Jonathan Randall, who acquired the property in the mid- 1700s. It is a 480-acre land- patch, which along with Ward's Island and Sunken Meadow, nestles between Manhattan, the Bronx and Queens.
A montage of a potter's field, hospital, almshouse, and a reformatory, the House of Refuge, this island sports 27 baseball and softball fields, seven soccer/football fields, 11 tennis courts, a 70-station driving range and two 18-hole miniature golf courts.
Situated at a distance of just 300 feet from Manhattan, this island proudly flaunts its newest accessory--A new track-and- field center with an Olympic-quality 400-meter track inaugurated in 2003, along with a 19,500-seat amphitheater and water park.
And for the music lovers, Randalls Island, rather the large Downing Stadium to be specific is widely reputed as a music mecca. A number of legendary artists have graced the stage of this stadium, including Jimi Hendrix who performed here in the '60s.
Visit the Little Hell Gate Inlet Boardwalk, the Park's new educational boardwalk across the Little Hell Gate Inlet, which opened in the spring of 2005 under the initiation of RISF. The main highlights of this boardwalk are its excellent visibility, interpretive signage, and drop-down points, which provide an excellent view of all upcoming salt marsh and native wildlife.
The funding of this remarkable resource was done by New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) CMAQ/TEA-21 with a match from Council Member Reed, and plays a host to several casual visitors as well as participants in RISF's free Kids Island Club (KIC) Nature environmental education programs, run in partnership with local public schools.
Getting to the Randall's Island Park can be a bit tricky as it is located under the Triborough Bridge in the East River, between Manhattan, the Bronx, and Queens. You can go by car, from the bridge and take the Randall's Island exit. You can also board the M35 Bus, running from 125th Street and Lexington, that will take you to the island.
